Pamela Meyer presented the topic of her latest book: Lie
Spotters. The topic of the book and lecture was how to detect when someone is
lying. Meyer had an energetic and
interesting style of telling her story and knowledge. First she started with an
accusing statement to the audience. This invited the audience into her lecture.
From this moment she was able to gain their interest and trust. For those new
into presenting take not of the introduction Meyer used in her presentation.
She has an equal amount of information and examples but remembers to include
the audience. I believe most presenters forget this detail and the importance
of the audience.
Meyer used
many examples to help prove her points and to test her statements. She used the
Clinton scandal as an example and showed a clip of the news coverage. This
helps bring the past into the present. This allows the fact of lying and
deception be used in an educational setting. This made her point clearer
because of the experience the audience had with that example. This brings the
audience into what she is saying and helps make her point clearer. Her
knowledge was shared through her many examples and situations. Meyer did not
rattle a lost of ways you can tell when someone is being deceptive. She
discusses why we lie, who lies the most and lastly the “tell all” signs of
lying. She was prepared with visuals to gain the interest of the audience.
This speech
has helped me develop a deeper understanding of the topic and some insight to
the speaker. For starters, the topic of deception is an interesting topic and
Meyer opens you to more clear examples and signs of deception. Meyer’s speech
has intrigued me to review her more as a person. Through her mannerisms and
personality in her speech one can get a great first impression but I believe
there is more. Lie Spotters by Meyer is one that I need to get a hold of to go in
deeper of this topic and the author!
